The Vagus Nerve

The Vagus Nerve ⁣- Latin translation - The Wandering Nerve ⁣

The Vagus Nerve plays an essential role in survival, social engagement, sensing safety & generating joy and is a critical gateway to our overall wellbeing and particularly through the peri-to-post menopause phase of life, where we need to be acutely mindful of our stress and anxiety levels. ⁣

It is the longest cranial nerve in the body, wandering from the brain through the face, throat and into the abdomen and organs, connecting the brainstem to the body, with 80-90% of the Vagus Nerve continuously conveying information from the body to the brain. ⁣

Relaying sensory information from the throat, heart, lungs and abdomen and motor functions with the muscles involved in swallowing and speech and so much more. ⁣

And did you know that the Vagus Nerve is feeding into critical parasympathetic signals responsible for respiration and heart rate function and the digestive track, in particular the gut (gut instinct!) ⁣

The Vagus Nerve sends anti-inflammatory signals to all parts of the body, communicating with the diaphragm and is the link from the gut to the brain, helping us to deal with stress, anxiety and fear !⁣

And when we tap into our Vagus Nerve, through breathwork and meditation, we can positively impact the nerves function with the diaphragm, lower heart rate and blood pressure and allow us to relax our systems and make a significant difference to our wellbeing. ⁣

We can also improve our Vagus Nerve tone, through gut health, cold water stimulation, using our throat through singing, deep breathing and conscious mindful wellness habits.⁣
