Liver Health

The Liver is the star of our endocrine system, it is critically important to the bodies filtration and detoxification.  Everything that enters the body, through the mouth, skin or breath goes through the liver.  Not just are we affected by what we consume, but we are also surrounded by environmental toxins every minute.

The role of the liver is very extensive, it helps us to filter toxins, excrete excess cholesterol and hormones, it helps us to metabolise medications, fats, proteins and carbohydrates and allows us to store vitamins and minerals and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Over a quarter of adults in Europe have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, due to factors such as excess weight, insulin resistance, high blood sugar or high levels of fat in the blood.  The impact of that puts a strain on the liver to do its critical job optimally.

At any time of life, but in particular during peri to post menopause, when our systems are under great strain and we are managing much stress, It is important to reduce caffeine reliance, as it interferes with the livers ability to process and remove excess hormones, we need to moderate alcohol consumption and dial up on filtered water and start to scrutinise the products we are consuming, swapping out cosmetics for less chemical options and doing all we can to reduce our toxic load, all of which will boost liver function.

Our ancestors did not have endless access to food, it is a modern day habit we have created that we have not been designed to tolerate well.

Intermittent fasting is a very beneficial habit that allows the liver the time to balance metabolism, it  helps fat burning and muscle gain and allows time for cellular repair and can help to lower insulin levels, a recommended and attainable fasting is during the night for approximately 12-14hours, for example 7pm to 9am daily or as consecutively often as possible.
